The Blue Horse has been a Downtown Mystic institution for over forty years.   Combining her academic background in fashion and textiles with her love for the local community, owner Margaret Macris bought The Blue Horse in 1992 when her youngest son started kindergarten.

Blue Horses or Die grossen blauen Pferde (The Large Blue Horses) is a 1911 painting by German painter and printmaker Franz Marc (1880–1916). Be advised: the painting has been removed from exhibit at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota and there are no current plans to display it.

Although no one has real evidence that blue horses exist, there are many tales of sightings across the region from legions of true believers. Legend has it that a horse called "Big Lex" turned blue from grazing in nourishing bluegrass pastures his entire life. Perhaps he found the very source of these limestone rich waters.

He founded Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider) group with the Russian artist Vassily Kandinsky. They used bright colors to express their feelings about things, rather than simply painting what they saw. They are called Expressionists. Marc died at age 36 in World War I, hit in the head by a grenade while riding a horse.

The Bluehorses (also known as The Blue Horses) were a Celtic rock band from Cardiff, Wales, blending a mixture of rock and electric folk, and notable for being fronted by two fiddle players.

Blue Horses in symbolically bound to certain of the originating conceptions of the contemporaneous Blue rider group: in the symbol of the horse as a vehicle of breakthrough, in the emphasis on the spirituality of blue, and in the idea of spirituality battling materialism. Because of the importance of this form to Kandinsky, and the subsequent adoption by Marc and Klee, the triangle-mountain was likely a logo of Blue Rider ambitions by the time Yellow Cow was created. Given Marc's identification of blue with maleness, and the probability that Blue Horse I is to a degree a self-portrait, the blue mountain can be seen as the embodiment of Marc's aspirations - artistic and otherwise - which in their spirituality complement the yellow sensuality of the cow.

Officially named “Blue Mustang,” but often called “Blucifer,” due largely to its haunting red eye, the story behind this horse sculpture is an interesting one. Originally imagined to be a pull-off for travelers, this piece of art was commissioned for Denver International Airport in 1993.
